Located in the heart of downtown Richmond, the Residences at the John Marshall project included the historic preservation and adaptive re-use of the historic Hotel John Marshall Hotel into a mixed-use, multifamily residential apartment building. The existing hotel, which was in a state of abandonment and disrepair, was evaluated to determine which remaining building components were historically significant. Original 1929 elements such as the facade, ballrooms, hotel corridors, decorative lighting, doors and hardware were preserved and restored. The original lobby design, which had been lost to time, was rebuilt per the original documents, along with other connected public and ground floor retail spaces. In the tower, 238 Class “A” apartments were constructed behind and while maintaining the hotel’s original corridors. Two 1929 ballrooms were restored for event use, along with a newly-renovated catering kitchen, while a third original ballroom on the top floor was converted into incredibly unique and richly-detailed apartments.
