Located in the historic Philadelphia
Saving Fund Society (PSFS) building
in City Center, Philadelphia, the first
international style skyscraper built in
the United States, the Loews Philadelphia
Hotel sits at the corner of 12th Street and
Market Street. This large-scale renovation
included alterations to the lobby and
restaurant spaces, meeting rooms, back of
house offices, main entrances and adjacent
building facade.
One of the challenges of the project
included the relocation and reorientation of
the main entry. Due to the historic nature
of the building, the design needed to gain
the approval of the Philadelphia Historic
Commission. RJTR’s solution evoked the
original 1932 design while repositioning
the entry and providing the necessary
functionality and flow for the hotel. The new
arrival point provides a smoother, enhanced
sense of arrival and welcomes guests into a
new lobby lounge.
A brand-new restaurant and bar concept, the
Bank & Bourbon restaurant takes inspiration
from the rich history of the building along
with a bourbon theme to create a space
imbued with character, authentic finishes
and highly detailed custom millwork.

An open display kitchen with charcuterie
station shows off the chefs’ skills, while a
large chef’s table nearby provides a great
way to entertain small groups with private
tastings or special menus.
A secret, private bourbon tasting room,
accessed through a hidden bookcase door,
offers an intimate gathering space for special
guests. Custom-designed blackened steel
and glass partitions provide flexibility to
divide the space and offer one larger or two
smaller private dining rooms.
" We successfully navigated the City of Philadelphia's Historic Design Commission and Building Department to gain approval of the exterior skin improvements and building changes, the project finished on time and under budget, and this project represents the fifth Loews Hotel project completed by RJTR since 2010."
